Problem: When NFTs were still in their early days of understanding and the question of What is art? was on everyone’s mind, we had an idea: Could bacteria have a place on the blockchain? And more specifically, could you Trojan horse the science of the microbiome into the tumultuous world of Web3?
In 2021 we were still recovering from the pandemic, a year where a single microbe tore apart the world and put microbes as public enemy #1. At Seed, we saw this as an opportunity to look closer at the artifacts of disgust and throw away bias to embrace the shared universal experiences of what it means to be human.
Experiment: We need to talk about sh*t. 💩 And in the world of Seed, our sh*t is a goldmine. So we set out to audaciously educate the world on the value of poop. By selling it as an NFT. For a sh*t ton of money.
Our hypothesis—if we codify excrement as art and ascribe significant value to it, can we illuminate what it means to turn seemingly disgusting things into solutions to some of the greater problems in health?
Some of the most serious digestive diseases (C. diff) can be solved by the method of obtaining someone else's poop through fecal microbiota transplants (FMTs) where donor feces from a healthy gut microbiome is given to someone suffering from digestive health conditions or infections.
This is not a render. This is someone’s poop lyophilized into a FMT capsule (or “crapsule”).
How It Worked:
Matty Mo took a poop.
Matty Mo gave us his poop.
We collaborated with a lab to encapsulate it, and set it in a large glass cube.
Matty Mo digitized it and turned it into an NFT to sell.
The money of the sale of the NFT will fund research in the gut-brain axis, neurodegeneration, and disease linked to the gut microbiome.
